The mother pig is in a precarious condition. Her body testifies to the cruelty she endured: flat feet and leg sores from the crate bars and barren concrete floors common in factory farms, as well as kick bruises and burns from the attack that left her lying exhausted and unable to eat in her farrowing crate. Her energy and appetite remain very low, and, as a result, she’s having trouble producing sufficient milk for her new babies. Her fear, however, has subsided in the presence of her new, gentle caregivers, who describe her as “angelic.” She calmly greets our staff as they administer her fluids and antibiotics and care for her piglets. Astoundingly, this animal who has known such violence at human hands has already recognized that the people now surrounding her are her friends. Her capacity to trust is an inspiration to us as we fight to restore her and her babies to health.
If their mother not been rescued, and if they survived birth and infancy in the harsh conditions of the factory farm, those baby pigs would have grown up in dim, crowded warehouses and been slaughtered for pork when they were just six months old. In place of that senseless misery and death, they now have ahead of them life, liberty, and a world of happiness. (via Julia: Brutalized Pregnant Pig Gives Birth Hours After Rescue | Farm Sanctuary)

The manufacturer has the following to say about this product:Don’t feed your dog slaughterhouse waste, diseased or euthanized animals, or support horrible factory farms! All meat-based commercial pet food companies without exception use ingredients not fit for human consumption such as cancerous body parts, intestines, feet, heads, feathers, blood, gonads, etc. in their pet food. Farm animal tissue from cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, lambs, and even farm-raised fish all contain toxic growth hormones and antibiotic residues. Unfortunately, the US and state governments do not inspect pet food ingredients for quality

Your Animal Activism Score

Do you consider yourself an animal welfare activist? There is a simple way to measure your compassion and effectiveness.

  1. Choose a time frame: day, week, month or year.
  2. (x) Tally how many animals you have rescued, saved or attempted to help in the time frame you have chosen.
  3. (y) Subtract the number of animals you have eaten, served to your loved ones as food or worn for clothing in the same time frame.
  4. (z) = your animal activism score.

x - y = z

COMPASSION : sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it

“And those who dismiss love for our fellow creatures as mere sentimentality overlook a good and important part of our humanity. But it takes nothing away from a human to be kind to an animal. And it is actually within us to grant them a happy life and a long one.” – Joaquin Phoenix | EARTHLINGS

How to Recycle Fur
∞ “We are all animals of this planet. We are all creatures. And nonhuman animals experience pain sensations just like we do. They too are strong, intelligent, industrious, mobile, and evolutional. They too are capable of growth and adaptation. Like us, firsthand foremost, they are earthlings. And like us, they are surviving. Like us they also seek their own comfort rather than discomfort. And like us they express degrees of emotion. In short like us, they are alive.” ~ Joaquin Phoenix | EARTHLINGS
